Standing Strong at Standing Rock

Finalist in News & Media, Facebook Presence

Objectives

As one of the first national media organizations to have video journalists on the ground in North Dakota, Fusion continues to show that this moment and movement are much, much bigger than just a fight for clean water.

Fusion's Standing Rock coverage has reached tens of millions of Facebook users and received over 60 million views on Facebook alone. The story has mobilized hundreds of thousands on social media networks and Fusion's storytelling has helped raised awareness around issues of environmental stewardship and Native American struggles, which often go uncovered in mainstream media.

Due to the tireless work of the water protectors and amplification by outlets like Fusion, the Dakota Access pipeline protests couldn't be ignored by politicians. After 6 months of fighting, the Obama administration shut down the project and for now, Native activists and environmentalists, are celebrating a tentative victory.

Strategy and Execution

In a series of character-driven features, animated and hosted explainers, breaking news videos, and Facebook lives, Fusion has been documenting this historic gathering of tribal nations and showcasing their long-neglected perspectives. Our coverage has included interviews with Native activists like Nantinki Young, a volunteer chef cooking for thousands; Native youth who have become leaders in the fight; and military veteran allies who have joined up in solidarity.

From finding the right reporters who could build strong relationships with a distrustful community to enduring freezing weather, Fusion has overcome various obstacles to bring our audience stories from Standing Rock. We've stayed the course and broadcast lives from rural areas with limited cell reception and turned around day-of breaking news pieces filmed and filed by reporters using smart phones.
