iHeartRadio Earth

Entered in Environment & Sustainability

Objectives

In 2020, iHeartMedia made a company-wide commitment with the launch of iHeartRadio Earth, a long-term sustainability initiative designed to inspire iHeart’s millions of listeners to take action to positively impact the environment. Now in its fourth year, iHeartRadio Earth is rooted in the belief that millions of small actions have the potential to make a massive difference for the environment.

Using iHeartMedia’s massive reach, iHeartRadio Earth aims to make a positive impact on the environment through the collective actions of iHeartRadio listeners. Curated by National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), the multi-year PSA campaign educates audiences across iHeart’s broadcast radio stations and platforms about small steps they can take in their daily lives to make a positive impact in their own communities and on the planet. The radio PSAs address issues such as consumers’ behavioral changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on energy and water usage as well as how families shop for, consume and dispose of food; waste reduction; energy optimization; reducing food waste and carpooling to reduce greenhouse emissions; and so much more. The spots run daily on iHeartRadio stations across the country.

In addition, listeners are encouraged to find volunteer opportunities in their communities through Volunteer Match.

Strategy and Execution

"30-40% of food goes uneaten in the US and the average American family of four loses $1,500 to uneaten food each year. Shop smarter and save money and emissions by making a grocery list, controlling meal portions, eating leftovers, and composting.

When we all chip in, our world becomes a better place. Brought to you by iHeartRadio Earth and the National Environmental Education Foundation. To find more tips for smarter, sustainable living or to take action in your own community go to iHeartRadio.com/earth.” iHeartRadio Earth PSA aired in 2022

We brought our campaign to life by sharing fun facts about the planet to get our listeners’ attention and then offering tips and ideas for how they could take small steps that will equate to large-scale collective action for our planet, while saving time and money.  The series of PSAs were developed in partnership with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), the nation’s leading organization in lifelong environmental learning.

iHeartMedia leverages its wide reach – over a quarter billion monthly listeners – to influence a movement of earth-conscious small steps with a collective large impact.

Because these spots run daily across all of our 860 stations, it is part of our strategy to change the messaging continually to align with the time of year, season, or timely current events that may be occurring.

All the PSA drive listeners to the iHeartRadio Earth website – a destination for listener resources on how to take small steps in the community.

We have also teamed up with Volunteer Match to provided listeners with local volunteer opportunities and information about virtual ways to explore the outdoors, including free guided tours of national parks, online workshops and more.

Results

Since the program’s inception in April 2020, iHeart has contributed over $10 million in donated media across all iHeartMedia stations for this campaign alone.

iHeartRadio Earth is the only campaign in our history that has run daily for 3 years.  We continually refresh the content to reach our listeners in unique and effective ways.
