Objectives

Extra Life is a gaming focused peer-to-peer fundraising program of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals® (CMN Hospitals), a nonprofit that raises funds and awareness for 170 children's hospitals in the United States and Canada. Since its inception in 2008, Extra Life participants (Extra Lifers) have raised more than $55 million for children's hospitals.

Extra Life utilizes the power of gaming (both online and offline) to help raise vital funds for children's hospitals. Through key events and initiatives, Extra Life empowers participants to "Play Games, Heal Kids," through charity gaming for their selected children's hospital.

Strategy and Execution

It all started with a little girl from Orange, Texas.

Whether you're a Twitch partner, Mixer streamer or playing games off the grid, Extra Life engages and empowers gamers of all creeds to DIY fundraise for their selected children’s hospital year-round.

We host key touchpoints with our participants and the gaming world at large through events such as our annual Extra Life United gaming tournament, activations at E3 Expo and other conventions, our annual Tabletop Appreciation Weekend and our annual Game Day each fall where hundreds of gamers commit to playing games for 24-hours.

Extra Lifers raise money year-round, typically from the comfort of their own home, and ultimately celebrate one grand total together.

Results

Extra Life is the first charity gaming event to break into the P2P Forum's Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Thirty, a list usually dominated by legacy programs. Extra Life reached the highest percentage growth of all programs in 2018, growing an unmatched 24% YOY.

November 2—4, 2018, also known as our Game Day weekend, brought in 70,000 donations alone, generating $3.2 million.

In 2018, more than 50,000 participants on 5,282 teams from 107 countries raised $13.5 million for sick and injured kids throughout North America.
